Women

From the early 1800’s until the 1930’s, women made up the majority of dry snuff users. How they would use it would be to take a small stick, or a twig, chew on the end until it resembled a brush and “dip” the moistened end into the dry snuff. Then, the snuff was rubbed on the gums. It was so popular with women of the day that it could be found in almost every home in the states. It was also used by all walks of women from the southern homemaker to the Fifth avenue socialite and the name would also change from Dry snuff to “Dipping” snuff. The practice and popularity of dipping dry snuff would soon be replaced with the invention of the pre-rolled cigarette in the mid 1920’s but, the name wouldn’t.
